SolarEdge is now exporting US-made solar hardware to Europe
SolarEdge has begun exporting US-made residential solar inverters to Europe, a rare move as few US solar manufacturers ship hardware abroad.
By contrast, the EU export value of wind turbines (€2.8 billion) was much higher than the corresponding value for imports. The EU import value of solar panels decreased by 43% between 2023 and 2024 (see Figure 2), due to a drop in prices, even though the quantity imported slightly increased by +2%.
Europe has a trade policy for solar panels that is designed to level the playing field between Europe and countries like China. This column assesses the EU's stance. Antidumping policy is supposed to promote a fair competitive environment between domestic import-competing and foreign exporting firms.
Europe relies on solar photovoltaic (PV) as one of the main energy sources in its climate roadmap. Europe has been a pioneer and leader in PV production, and the installation targets are continually increasing via Renewable Energy Directive revisions.
The EU import values of solar panels and liquid biofuels in 2024 were much higher than the corresponding EU export values which were €0.7 billion for solar panels and €1.8 billion for liquid biofuels. By contrast, the EU export value of wind turbines (€2.8 billion) was much higher than the corresponding value for imports.
